June 3-5, 2008 in Gettysburg , PA: Dairy Analysis 20/20:
East Meets West Multi-State Business Management Workshop

Progressive dairy producers from across the U.S. are invited to participate in a unique educational program, called Dairy Analysis 20/20. Dairy Analysis 20/20 will provide leading producers a cutting-edge educational program on best management practices in business and information management. Producers will have an opportunity to compare performance indicators (benchmarks) of key management areas of their businesses and see how leading producers in other states perform. Enrollment is limited to 25 producers to foster small-group discussion. The program is presented by Penn State Dairy Alliance in collaboration with Cornell University PRO-DAIRY, University of Florida , New Mexico State University and AgChoice Farm Credit.

Each session offered in this program will consist of a brief presentation by the faculty, followed by small-group discussions of the business performance and best management practices that allow top performers to achieve their high levels of success. Session topics will investigate: Competing in a Global Market; Managing Multiple Locations; Impact of Capital Management and Operations Management on Business Profitability; Evaluating the Economics of Feeding and Nutrition; A Unique Approach to Managing Cow Turnover: Why and When Do Cows Leave?; Evaluating Parlor Performance with Parlor Efficiency Measures and Milk Harvest Costs; and more. Keynote speaker will be Andrei Mikhalevsky, Managing Director, Fonterra Ingredients. He will present: “Strategies for being a competitive player in the world market in 2015.”

The program will be held in Gettysburg , Pennsylvania , on June 3-5, 2008. A complete agenda and registration form can be found in the workshop brochure at: http://www.das.psu.edu/user/da/pdf/DairyAnalysis2020_2.pdf  Producers must submit financial and production records to complete a detailed business analysis for 2006 and 2007 in order to participate; program presenters will assist in the analysis. See page 4 of the workshop brochure for more information about this.

The workshop is scheduled to permit dairy families to incorporate a mini vacation into their trip, if they desire. Gettysburg is well-known for it historical significance to our great nation. The battlefield is one of the most interesting places to visit in Pennsylvania . In addition, Gettysburg is only 40 miles from Hershey Park and Chocolate World in Hershey, Pennsylvania; 40 miles from Lancaster County’s Amish communities; and 75 miles from Washington D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland.

Deadline to register is April 15, 2008, but producers are encouraged to submit their registration forms as soon as possible because registration will be closed when the maximum number of farms is reached. For more information, contact Brad Hilty, information management specialist, Penn State Dairy Alliance, at 888-373-7232.

June 4-6: Animal Agrosecurity Conference
The North Dakota State University Extension Service is hosting an international animal
agrosecurity conference June 4-6 in Fargo. The “Beyond Borders: Regional Animal Agrosecurity” conference will focus on two questions:
* What would happen if an animal agrosecurity incident involved the U.S.-Canadian
border?
* What role do those in the agricultural, food and health industries, as well as emergency
services and law enforcement, have in animal agrosecurity?
“Emergencies and disasters are always local,” says Charlie Stoltenow, NDSU Extension
veterinarian. “They will require local action, resources and resolve to deal with an animal
agrosecurity incident involving the U.S.-Canadian border. This conference is just the first
step in bringing international, national, state and local individuals together to identify the
resources on both sides of the border that will be needed to prevent and, if needed,
resolve an animal agrosecurity incident.”
Other conference topics will include developing county-based animal agrosecurity plans.
The conference also will consist of several programs to educate participants on animal
agrosecurity issues.
The conference is designed for U.S. and Canadian teams that include producers,
veterinarians, Extension/outreach staff, regulatory veterinary medicine personnel, animal
health board members, agriculture department and homeland defense representatives,
emergency managers, public health officials, state animal response team and veterinary
reserve corps members, law enforcement officers, livestock association members,
veterinary practitioners and commodity group members.
Speakers will include U.S. and Canadian veterinary officers; producers; commodity and
industry representatives; technical experts; university and Extension faculty; and federal,
state and provincial officials.
Participants are expected from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Iowa,
Alaska and Wisconsin, as well as the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative State Research, Education, and
Extension Service is underwriting the conference through the Extension Disaster
Education Network (EDEN).
For more information or to register, go to the EDEN Web site at
www.eden.lsu.edu/AASFargo/. Registration will be online only. The fee is $75. The
electronic registration will be open from April 1 to May 15. The conference will be
limited to 250 registrants.
Additional informational also is available from Stoltenow, who is conference chair, at
