Spring was starting to appear at the 2008 Spring Dairy Expo where dairy shows and sales were held in Columbus, Ohio, March 27-29. A total of 501 animals from 5 different breeds were exhibited and placed by judges Ted Dement of Kenny, Illinois, and Jeff Stephens of Troy Ontario, Canada. There were 4 different breed sales and over 186 animals that traveled across the auction block.
Dairy Cattle Shows
Ayrshire Show – There were 86 animals placed by judge Jeff Stephens during the National Ayrshire Spring show. The 4 year old cow was named Grand Champion of the show, Mill Valley Charm’s Heather and the Senior three year old, Mill Valley Pandelaro Taffey, was selected as the Reserve Champion. Both animals were bred and owned by John and Donna Greiwe of Sidney Ohio. Junior champion was Duncan Sakic Madeline, a winter yearling heifer, owned by Rachel, Neil and Drew Duncan of Warsaw, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was Mill Valley Pandalareo Eden, owned by John Howman of Massillon, Ohio. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor was Emerald Farms, Winchester, Ohio.
In the junior Ayrshire Show Grand Champion was Shiredale Phil’s Susan, a Senior 2 year old, shown by Tyler, Tessa, Tanner and Brendan Topp of Wooster, Ohio. Reserve Champion was Edgbrook BB Andrea, an Aged cow, shown by Trisha and Caleb Nicely and Vencil Graves, Parksville, Kentucky. Junior Champion was Duncan Sakic Madeline, a winter yearling heifer, shown by Rachel, Neil and Drew Duncan, Warsaw, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was the summer yearling, Spring-Run Mohawk Ivory, shown by Clinton Steele. This animal was purchased in the Ohio Ayrshire Spring Sale.
Brown Swiss – There were a total of 49 head judged by Ted Dement, of Kenny, Illinois. Topp –View Farms of Botkins, Ohio exhibited the Grand Champion, an aged cow, Unrast Link 835. Runner up and Reserve Champion was Springhill-OH J Precious-ET, an aged cow owned by Springhill Swiss of Big Prairie, Ohio. Junior champion was Brook Hollow Tiki Bar-ET, a spring yearling heifer owned by Delbert and Heather Yoder of West Salem, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was Sherona-Hill Dynasty Paris, owned by Express/Stan-Mar-Dale Holsteins and Morgan, Urbana, Ohio. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor was Meadow Hill Farm, Gary Mase and Family of Cochranton, PA.
In the junior show Grand champion was an aged cow, Breeze Ridge Prelude Karma, owned by Chantal Guidice of New Brighton, PA. Reserve champion was Top Acres Ballet-ET, a Senior 2 year old, owned by Peter Crone of Killbuck, Ohio. Junior champion was Kulp Terra TA Showgirl ET owned by Lindsey Ruck. Reserve junior champion was Rendulic Lily MPR owned by Bryan Doehr of Wellington, Ohio.
Holsteins
There were 186 Holsteins exhibited and evaluated by judge Jeff Stephens. This is a national show and there were cattle exhibited from a couple different states. Grand Champion was an aged cow, Irwindale Leduc Molly, owned by Team Holstein of Hampshire, IL. Reserve Champion was Wesemann Forbidden Marilyn, a 4 year old cow, owned by Team Holstein of Hampshire, IL. Junior champion was Wegnerlann Goldwyn Gung Ho, a summer yearling owned by Triple-T Holsteins, Mike Heath and Kurt Wolf of North Lewisburg, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was Tower-Ridge Primetime Paris, a winter yearling heifer, owned by Austin Rademacher of Penfield, IL. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor was Express & Stan-Mar-Dale Holsteins, Urbana, Ohio.
In the junior show Grand champion was the senior 3 year old, K-Rae-K Durham Hottie, owned by Kassandra Krebs and Tessa Topp of Glenford, Ohio. Reserve champion was the 5 year old cow, Carrdale Damion Raven, owned by Katie Cole of Bloomville, Ohio. Junior champion was La-Foster Durham Jen, a spring yearling heifer owned by Cole and Olivia Cummings of Sidney, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was the fall heifer calf, Con-River 1049 Shottle-ET, owned by Andrew, Bradley and Rebecca Conrad of Grafton, Ohio.
Jersey
Judge Ted Dement was busy in the ring as he placed 151 head of Jerseys. Grand champion was SAR Apollos Frisky, a 4 year old cow owned by Bush River and Skip-A-Rilla Jerseys of Newberry, South Carolina. Reserve champion was the aged cow, Barber Image Whistle owned by Bush River and Skip-A-Rilla Jerseys of Newberry, South Carolina. Junior champion was a fall yearling, Sweet Peas Justice Davine, owned by Triple-T Holsteins, Mike Heath and Willy McKay of North Lewisburg, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was DKG Supreme Janet, a summer yearling owned by John and Donna Griewe of Sidney, Ohio. Premier Breeder was Oakhaven Jerseys, Galloway, Ohio and Premier Exhibitor was Bush River and Skip-A-Rilla Jerseys of Newberry, South Carolina.
In the junior show Grand champion was a senior 2 year old, Indiana Veda, owned by Erin and Jody Williams of McConnelsville, Ohio. Reserve champion was also a senior 2 year old, Jer Bel Action Collie, owned by David King of Fremont, Ohio. Junior champion was Georges Sage Paprika, a fall heifer calf owned by George Colpetzer of Greenville, Pennsylvania. Reserve junior champion was a fall yearling heifer, Belmont Marissa, owned by Erin and Jody Williams of McConnelsville, Ohio.
Milking Shorthorn
Once again, Ted Dement worked the ring as he placed 29 head of Milking Shorthorn cattle. Grand champion was Way-Lu Clay Prissy-EXP, a 5 year old cow owned by Amanda Curtis of Anna, Ohio. Reserve grand champion was a 4 year old cow, Udder Delight Ava, owned by Cindy and Tori Climer and Sarah Tomlin of Chillicothe, Ohio. Junior champion was a stylish summer yearling heifer, Topp-View Blue Spruce Awesome, owned by Topp-View and Blue Spruce Farm, New Holland, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was a fall heifer calf, Smart Court Saturday owned by Amanda Curtis of Anna, Ohio. Premier breeder Smart's Jerseys & Shorthorns of Anna, Ohio and Premier Exhibitor was Spring Meadows, Bodey Family of Urbana, Ohio.
In the junior show Grand champion was a 4 year old cow, Udder Delight Ava, and Reserve grand was an aged cow, Tres Colles JJ Ollie. Both animals were owned by Cindy and Tori Climer and Sarah Tomlin of Chillicothe, Ohio. Junior champion was a fall yearling heifer, Tres Colles EFR Addison and Reserve junior champion was a summer yearling, Tres Colles JJ RedBird. Both animals were owned by Cindy and Tori Climer and Sarah Tomlin of Chillicothe, Ohio.
Supreme Champions
The grand finale of Spring Dairy Expo came on Saturday afternoon with the naming of the Supreme Champions, following the Holstein group classes. Each breed’s Grand Champion and Junior Champions entered the ring with a plethora of awards accompanying each animal, as was announced as the cattle paraded across the ring. Both Judges worked together to select the Supreme Champions of the 2008 show. In the Open Show, Irwindale Leduc Molly, an aged cow, was named as the Supreme Champion. Molly is owned by Team Holsteins of Hampshire, Illinois. The judges selected all other breed winners for the Reserve Supreme Champion. These include: Ayrshire, Mill Valley Charm’s Heather, owned by John and Donna Greiwe of Sidney, Ohio; Brown Swiss, Unrast Link 835, owned by Topp-View Swiss of Botkins, Ohio; Jersey, SAR Apollos Frisky, owned by Skip-A-Rilla and Bush River, of Newberry, South Carolina; Milking Shorthorn, Way-Lu Clay Prissy EXP, owned by Smart’s Jerseys and Shorthorns of Anna, Ohio.
Junior champion was Wegnerlann Goldwyn Gung Ho, a Holstein heifer owned by Triple-T Holsteins, Mike Heath and Kurt Wolf of North Lewisburg, Ohio. Reserve junior champion was the jersey heifer, Sweet Peas Justice Davine and owned by Triple-T Holsteins, Mike Heath and Willy McKay of North Lewisburg, Ohio.
In the junior show, Supreme champion was the Jersey cow, Indiana Veda, owned by Erin and Jody Williams of McConnelsville, Ohio. Reserve supreme champion was K-Rae-K Durham Hottie, a Holstein owned by Kassandra Krebs and Tessa Topp of Glenford, Ohio. Junior supreme champion of the junior show was the Brown Swiss heifer, Kulp Terra TA Showgirl-ET, shown by Lindsey Ruck. Reserve supreme champion of the junior show was the Holstein heifer, La-Foster Durham Jen, owned by Cole and Olivia Cummings of Sidney, Ohio.
SALES
Spring Expo Holstein Sale – "information written by Steve Deam, General Manager, Ohio Holstein Association"
Electricity was in the air as Lot#1 Aldens Ramos Emerald VG 87 EX MS stepped foot into sale ring on March 28th 2008 at the Spring Expo Sale in Columbus, OH. She had contracts and interest from four different AI companies and numerous embryo inquiries from four different countries as well. When it was all said and done Emerald sold for a price of $57,000 to Bellemac JR, Raymond and Jeremiah Anthony from Meadville, PA. The contending bidder was Rocky Mountain Holsteins, Alberta, Canada. Emerald was consigned by Alden Farms, Danville, OH. This price sets a record for any solely Ohio Holstein sponsored sale, breaking the record price of $35,000 for Straight Pine Elevation Holly-ET in the 1981 Echoes of Elevation Sale.
There was a tie for second high at the price of $11,500. Lot #2 was first choice female Zenith or Bolton out of Ri-Val-Re Shtle Desirae-ET from Andrew, Bradley & Rebecca Conrad, Grafton, OH. Lot #3 the consignment of Whiteleather Holsteins, Minerva, OH was a long, fancy and extremely correct three month old Shottle calf from the highest CTPI +1725 Hi Metro daughter in the world. Both of these investments were purchased by Oakfield Corners Dairy-Gordon Lamb Oakfield, NY.
The sale averaged $5,285 on 40 live Lots. Cattle went to Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, New York and Pennsylvania in addition to Ohio, and embryos are slated for England.
Buckeye Dairy Club: The Buckeye Dairy club had another great sale day with two different sales. The Buckeye Classic Holstein Elite sale averaged $3,090 on 45 lots. The high selling animal was lot 13, Nor-Bert Jose Montana-ET and consigned from Nor-Bert Farms, LTD of Bremen, Indiana. The winning bid was $9,000 and purchased by Oakfield Corners Dairy, Oakfield, NY. The second high selling animal was Pine-Tree Gold Tippy 1649, a consignment of Matthew Steiner from Rittman, Ohio. Winning the bid at $8,750 was Brian Ramsey of Louisville, Ohio.
The Buckeye Dairy Club Jersey sale averaged $ 2,581 on 13 lots. The high selling animal was lot 7, Shipley Rocket Nora and consigned from Stacey Atherton of Newark, Ohio. The winning bid was $4,000 and purchased by David and Beth Ertl of Edison, Ohio. The second high selling animal was lot 2, a consignment of Greta Koebel of Three Oaks, Wisconsin. Tri-Koebel B Money-ET sold for $3,700 and was purchased by Gene Starky of Mechanicsburg, Ohio.
Ayrshire – The sale ring was packed with anxious bidders as 45 Ayrshire’s were on the sale block, ready to go to a new home. The sale averaged $1,677 and cattle will travel to a couple different states and Canada. The high selling animal was lot 39, Palmyra Granite Andrea. This senior 3 year old cow was a consignment of Jordan Creek of Hagerstown, Maryland and was purchased for $4,000 by Marlin Palick and Alex McCaig of Quebec, Canada. The second high selling animal was lot 38, Marbrae Wilton’s Panda, consigned by Brian MacFarlane of Quebec, Canada. Winning the bid at $3,600 was the Yoder family of Pennsylvania.

Brown Swiss - Once again, spring was in the air and many enthusiastic bidders were present for the annual Midwest Review, a premier Brown Swiss Sale held in the state of Ohio. 58 head averaged $5,440 and will call 14 different states and Canada home in the near future. Buyers purchased animals all the way from California to New Hampshire and down to Florida. Lot 1, GS Premium Lisa, was the top selling lot at $22,000. This lot was an All American Jr. 3 year old in 2006 and consigned by Samantha Garst of New Windsor, Maryland. The buyer was Bradner Farms, Abottsford, British Columbia. The second high selling animal at $20,000 was lot 5, Sun-Made Puzzle Bracelet and was consigned by Wayne Sliker and Garrison Brothers of St. Paris, Ohio. Lost Elm Farm of Berlin, Wisconsin was the winning bidder. |
